Vehicle Description
OVERVIEW
This custom Camaro roadster began life as a six-cylinder, three-speed 1967 Camaro convertible. It was transformed over a three-year build that was completed around 2009, and that year it won 1st Place in the Semi Roadster Class at the 60th Annual Grand National Roadster Show, along with a number of Best awards at other shows. In 2010 it was featured in Camaro Milestones, presented by Corvette & Chevy magazine, in the article "Horse Power: A Clydesdale-Styled Custom 1967 Camaro." The smoothed body is finished in champagne with purple graphics over a two-tone tan leather interior. A GM Performance ZZ383 crate V8 topped by an Inglese eight-stack Weber 48 IDA induction system provides the power, paired with a GM 4L60E overdrive automatic and a Ford 9" rear end. The sale includes the magazine.
EXTERIOR
The original owners kept a Clydesdale, and the purple graphics on the hood, fenders and quarter panels represent the horse's flowing mane rather than traditional flames. They are recessed into the champagne finish rather than laid on top of it, as if the purple were the base color. To create the roadster, the factory folding top and header were deleted and the windshield pillars were chopped, smoothed and molded into a custom cowl. The door windows were closed off, and the doors were reshaped so they flow into a newly designed rear deck with rolled padding along the door tops. The factory bodylines were otherwise left intact, with no rear wing, to keep the original shape. Other details include chrome front and rear bumpers, custom dual mirrors and a custom fuel filler set into the rear panel.
WHEELS, SUSPENSION & BRAKES
The car rides on Billet Specialties Street Star wheels, 18x7 in front and 18x8 in the rear. A TCI tubular front clip uses double-rail, mandrel-bent tubing, billet coilover shocks, urethane-bushed A-arms, drop spindles and an anti-roll bar, with a manual rack-and-pinion and a Flaming River steering column. The rear uses a four-link suspension with a Ford 9" rear end and tubular subframe connectors. Stopping power comes from Wilwood 11" disc brakes.
INTERIOR
The custom interior is trimmed in two-tone tan leather. The pleated front buckets are joined by rear seats molded into fiberglass frames in the style of an early-1960s Corvette, so the interior flows unbroken from the doors into the rear deck. A full-length custom console runs from the dashboard to the rear deck, and the door panels and dash are trimmed to match. The car was rewired with a Painless Performance harness, and the switches, door handles and shifter are by Lokar and Detroit Speed. Audio comes from a Pioneer 6.8" double-DIN touchscreen head unit with Bluetooth. The trunk houses twin 10" subwoofers and ARC Audio amplifiers whose covers are signed by Chip Foose, who also added sketches of the car.
INSTRUMENTATION
A billet steering wheel sits ahead of a one-off set of Classic Instruments gauges. During the build, the owners chose a speedometer face that had no matching gauge cluster, so Classic made the full set to match. It includes a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer and a quad gauge for fuel, temperature, oil pressure and volts. The odometer shows approximately 1,219 miles. True mileage is unknown.
MECHANICAL
The GM Performance ZZ383 is rated at 425 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. It has GM Fast Burn aluminum cylinder heads, a forged 4340 nitrided and induction-hardened crankshaft with a 3.80" stroke, forged rods and 9.6:1 compression. The steel hydraulic roller camshaft has .509/.528 lift and 222/230 duration at .050, with 1.5:1 roller rocker arms and stainless steel valves. Induction is through an Inglese eight-stack Weber 48 IDA setup with individual chrome velocity stacks on a raised, custom-ported intake manifold, and tubular headers feed a dual exhaust. A Billet Specialties Tru Trac pulley system, Detroit Speed accessories and a Be Cool radiator and fan complete the smoothed, detailed engin
